Use the camera axis for face light
A compact light near the webcam reduces one-sided shadows and keeps the eyes looking toward the brightest source. Leave enough separation to avoid a flat, overexposed face and to keep the webcam unobstructed.
Use a desk lamp when the work surface matters too
A movable lamp can light notes and keyboard work, then rotate toward the face for calls. It needs more placement discipline because a strong side angle can create uneven exposure or reflections.
Check the mounting surface
Thin laptop lids, curved monitor backs, vents, controls, and a centered webcam can conflict with a clamp. Measure before choosing a mount that looks universal in product photography.
Test the existing room first
Close or diffuse a bright window, turn off a harsh ceiling light, and place an ordinary lamp near camera height. The result reveals whether a compact call light is enough or the room needs broader lighting work.
