Monitor Arm Fit: Weight, VESA, Clamp and Desk Checks

Check the exact LX or HX single-arm profile against screen weight, mounting pattern, combined desk thickness and installation conditions. See why a weight-only match is incomplete.

The practical answer

An arm fits only when its minimum and maximum load, VESA attachment, clamp geometry, desk construction and screen leverage all work together. Measure the monitor without its stand, include attached accessories and reinforcement plates, and verify the exact clamp and tilt-pivot revision. Diagonal screen size alone is insufficient.

Your equipment, your constraints

Check the monitor, arm and desk

Use the exact model and your intended setup. Missing evidence remains visible; changing an answer clears the previous result.

The reference behind the result

Official-spec evidence checked October 19, 2026. These tables stay readable without running the interactive checker. Supported counts and dimensions do not establish every assembled configuration.

Sources and limits

We have not physically tested these combinations. An official limit, a suggested acceptance test and an independently measured result are different evidence types. Unknown configurations remain unknown. Merchant identity, price and stock must be checked separately.

Decisions the specifications alone do not settle

Use the weight the arm actually carries

A monitor's shipping weight or weight including its stand is the wrong input. Use weight without the removed stand, then add any VESA plate, mini PC or accessory carried by the arm. Gas-spring/constant-force arms can also fail to balance below their minimum load; an HX is not automatically an upgrade for a light 27-inch screen. The checker uses the named LX single and HX single profiles, not every product sold under those family names.

Measure the attachment as a three-dimensional space

Measure desk thickness where the clamp closes, the flat area underneath, the rear gap, lips, cable trays and the screw's access path. Add both reinforcement plates when comparing combined thickness with the clamp range. A clamp can fit the thickness number while its lower pad lands on a frame or bevel. A reinforcement plate can spread load on an approved surface; it does not certify hollow-core, glass or structurally unknown tops. Get the desk manufacturer's approval for the actual attachment location.

Treat clamp-revision conflicts as a reason to verify

Ergotron's older HX attachment drawing lists 16–66mm for its standard two-piece clamp, while some current product text uses a different lower bound. The checker deliberately names the drawing it uses and requires a separate check for other revisions. Do not silently combine the largest range from several documents. Photograph the supplied clamp or verify its exact kit number before relying on a boundary value. Under-mount, top-mount and grommet attachments have their own dimensions.

Curvature changes the tilt problem

A deep curved panel moves its center of gravity away from the tilt pivot. Its kilogram weight may fit the arm while the screen still needs a different manufacturer-approved pivot. HX standard and HD pivot configurations are separate assemblies. Ask Ergotron to confirm the exact display, depth and pivot; the checker leaves curves unresolved instead of inventing a torque limit. Also check VESA recesses, supplied screw length and whether the monitor needs a specific adapter.

Standing and walking desks need a movement check

Check screen position and cable slack at the highest and lowest desk positions and with the arm extended. More extension increases leverage on the mounting point. A static spec match does not measure walking vibration, desk-frame stiffness or monitor wobble. Separate single arms offer placement flexibility but need two appropriate mounting areas; a dual arm concentrates load. Retain the monitor's original stand until the assembled setup has passed your installation checks.

Common questions

My monitor is below the maximum weight. Why does the checker refuse a match?

The arm may also have a minimum balancing load, a different VESA pattern or an unsuitable clamp. Curved-screen torque and desk strength remain separate checks.

Can a plate make a hollow or glass desk safe for any arm?

No such guarantee follows from a plate. Desk construction, attachment location and the maker's instructions decide whether clamping is appropriate. The checker keeps unapproved construction unresolved.
