Inspect the desktop before adding a plate
Identify solid wood, particleboard, laminate, veneer, glass, hollow core, edge profile, aprons, cable trays, and existing damage. Follow the desk maker's mounting limits.
A plate spreads pressure but does not strengthen everything
A larger contact area can reduce localized crushing. It cannot repair a hollow, cracked, water-damaged, very thin, or unsupported desktop.
Keep contact surfaces flat
The clamp and any reinforcement plate should sit fully on stable surfaces above and below. Beveled edges and obstructions create uneven force.
Recheck after loading and movement
Install within the arm and desk limits, then inspect for indentation, slipping, flex, and fastener loosening after height changes and walking-desk use.
